Veganism
DefinitionVeganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as possible and practical, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose. In dietary terms, it refers to the practice of dispensing with all animal produce, including meat, fish, poultry, eggs, animal milks, honey, and their derivatives. Donald Watson was the founder of the U.K. Vegan Society and the inventor of the word "vegan". Unlike the word "vegetarian", the word "vegan" specifically implies moral concern for animals. Therefore the word vegan extends to more than just diet. For that reason, people who follow a vegan diet for reasons other than moral concern for animals are not considered vegan, but can be considered strict vegetarians. People choose to follow a vegan diet for various reasons. I talk about three of these reasons in my Compassion, Health and Environment pages. In the Eating Vegan page you can find information on what you can eat as a vegan to stay healthy.
