This is one of the very first vegan cookbooks I owned after I
went vegan. It's good if you're more concerned with extremely healthy meals.
There's nothing wrong with that, just that the meals tend to have a very healthy
taste to it, instead of just being a nice meal. I have made several meals from
this, the eggplant lasagna, ginger cookies (I make them every Christmas), and
the Millet salad with apricots, ginger and pine nuts.
I haven't really used this book much for probably 2 reasons. One is, when I
first bought it, I was living in New York City. I didn't have much of a kitchen
and I had hundreds of amazing vegan restaurants to chose from, so I didn't have
to cook much. Now, I'm living in Denmark and many of the ingredients used in
this book are impossible to find or outrageously expensive. Especially since she
used a lot of tempeh. There's only one health food store that sometimes carries
it, only recently, and it's expensive. The few times I have had it, I didn't
find inspiration from the recipes. Maybe because it's so rare to find and
expensive, I always want something better to make than a reuben, meatloaf etc
with it.
Maybe, someday, I will enjoy this cookbook more. Until then, I will continue to
use my Sarah Kramer, Vegan Planet and 500 vegan Recipes cookbooks.
I can say, the information she gives on how food affects our children, and some
of the extreme health points are great. *I have nothing wrong with overly
healthy tasting food, I think I just haven't been so inspired by the recipes
included. It's just not my go-to cookbook.
